Micro
chipping events aim to help owners find lost pets
(Grand Rapids, December 3, 2005, 5:32 p.m.) It's
a simple procedure that may save the life of your
dog.
Earlier this week, Target 8 aired a story about
the Kent County Animal Shelter, and how dogs with
no identification are given four days before they
are put down.
The reaction from that story was overwhelming,
and it continues.
Saturday, Mackenzies Animal Shelter held a discounted
micro chipping clinic at the Cascade Chow Hound
store. Instead of the usual $20 to $30 charge,
dog owners could get a microchip embedded in their
dog for just $9.
That microchip contains owner information that
could be crucial if your dog becomes lost.
"This extends that holding period. If they
are micro chipped or licensed they are now extended
to a seven day holding period, so really for nine
dollars you are getting an extra three days, which
may be the difference between finding your dog
or having your dog euthanized," said Erik
Bauer of Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary.
The shelter plans to hold two more micro chipping
clinics for dog owners. The next one will be next
sSturday at the Chow Hound store on 28th Street
and Eastern.
The following Saturday they'll be back at the
Cascade Road store.
Both clinics run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
