It’s easy to fall in love with pets. They take one look at you with those big adorable eyes and your heart is stolen. For too many, though, adopting a pet is a spur-of-the-moment decision. Adopting a pet is a big decision and requires some serious thought and planning.

When considering pet adoption, the most important question you should ask yourself is, “Why do I want a pet?” Is it because that is the popular thing to do? A few years back Chihuahuas became a big hit, due to a popular commercial on T.V. All of a sudden everyone was buying Chihuahuas. Unfortunately, a lot of these same people did not take into consideration the temperament of the dog. For instance, Chihuahuas are not the best family dog. They don’t do as well with children as some other dogs. As a result of this, shelters became overwhelmed with abandoned Chihuahuas. A pet should not be a status symbol or a way of keeping up with the Joneses anymore than having a child would be.

Another thing to consider before adopting a pet is whether or not you have the time to really care for it. Pets take a lot of time and energy. If you are very busy with young children or you travel a lot for a job, you might want to wait until your life becomes a little more settled. A pet is a lot like a young child in that you must take the time to meet all of its basic needs. Pets need to be walked, fed, groomed and given time and attention. The time spent with a pet can be very rewarding and can even relieve stress, but you must be committed to giving that time daily.

In addition to time, pets require an investment of money. Before adopting, you should definitely consider the cost involved with caring for a pet. Can you afford it? Pets require a regular supply of food and grooming supplies as well as snacks and toys. They also get sick just like humans and require regular visits to the veterinarian. Do your finances allow room for an emergency should it happen?

There are many things to consider when adopting a pet. For some people, it is the best decision they could make and brings countless rewards. But in all cases, the decision to adopt requires consideration and planning. Are your up for the challenge? With the right planning and forethought, owning an adopted pet is sure to bring you years of joy and many happy memories.
