American Pit Bull
Known for their intelligence and loyalty American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent, loving and protective companion despite the unfair press they receive. Some American Pit Bull Terriers are dual-registered as an American Pit Bull Terrier with the UKC and as an American Staffordshire Terrier with the AKC; however, this draws criticism from many who point out that the bloodlines have been separate for too long for these to be considered the same breed. Choose from a responsible breeder and make sure the puppy is properly socialized and handled. A minimum of training will produce a tranquil, good, obedient, companion dog.

Much of a dog's temperament relates to it's breed history and genetic inheritance. It is common knowledge that the Pit Bull breed was developed for blood sports: Bull baiting, bear baiting, and later, dog fighting. What is not common knowledge is that in the days of organized dog fighting, the handlers of the combatants were habitually IN THE PIT with the dogs for the duration of the fight. They were required to pick up and separate the dogs several times while the dogs were in full fight frenzy. Before the fight, the handlers were required to wash each other's dogs, and after the fight, the badly injured dogs were often treated at ringside by strangers. Any dog that attacked or bit a handler (even if it was the other dog's handler) or anyone else at any time was culled, often on the spot, and would never have been bred.

Pit bulls are often found as “working” dogs, in industries such as police work, search and rescue, therapy dogs, and livestock workers. They also perform in organized sport from herding to obedience competitions. The Pit Bull is a strong, healthy animal. When trained correctly it will be a loving asset to your home.
