Apartments and Dogs

Apartments and Dogs - Pet productsFinding an apartment that will rent to you and your beloved dog can be quite the challenge. Many people in such a situation are forced to consider giving up their pup. When all the signs and ads say, “no pets allowed”, what is a dog owner to do?

Don’t give up too easily. Often times there are loopholes. Ask the landlord to consider allowing your pet if you give an extra deposit. Many landlords will make exceptions. Their biggest fear of pets, after all, is the mess that they leave behind. A pet deposit should cover any possible mess.

Talk to fellow pet owners who are renters. Ask them if there are any vacancies where they live. They may know of other places that will allow dogs. A lot of animal shelters and veterinarian offices will have a list of dog-friendly apartments to help in your search.

When you do find an apartment that allows dogs, be prepared for some strict requirements. Many apartments only allow small dogs under a certain weight and most landlords will require a pet deposit. That amount of money required for the deposit will vary, but could be as high as one month of rent. Some apartments may require references for your dog and a signed agreement stating that you will abide by their policies.

The search may take longer and require more diligence and patience than it would for someone without a dog, but keeping your pet close by will be well worth it. Once you finally have a home for you and your dog, don’t take it for granted. Follow all of the policies required of you, clean up or repair any messes made by your dog and keep your dog under your control at all times. Do this, and you will have a great reference to use the next time you have to search for an apartment.
