As dogs get older, their bodies begin to show signs of aging, much like humans do. Between 10-15 per cent of all dogs will experience arthritis at some point in their lives, the cause of which varies from dog to dog. Sometimes the disease can be brought on by a traumatic injury that has affected one or more joints. Arthritis can also be a cause of genetics or a problem with proper bone development. It is often caused by obesity and weight issues.
Whatever the cause, if you don’t know what signs to look for then you won’t know that your dog has arthritis or be able to treat it. Arthritis is by definition inflammation in one or more joints. It causes pain and stiffness in those joints. Weakness that progressively gets worse or the beginnings of failure in a particular limb are sure signs pointing to arthritis. You may notice that your dog is reluctant to go for walks or climb stairs. Other signs include stiffness of the joints in the morning that gets progressively better as the day goes on and swollen joints. If your dog shows any of these signs, you should set up an appointment with a veterinarian for diagnosis.
If your dog does suffer from arthritis, it is sure to be in pain much of the time. There are things you can do to help. Helping your dog to shed any extra pounds will prove to be a tremendous relief, especially if your dog’s arthritis is brought on by obesity. Even if it is not, though, extra weight is just more of a burden on already weary joints. Exercising the joints will help fight any stiffness your dog is experiencing. You can also use anti-inflammatory medication under the supervision of your vet. Many dogs and their owners have found relief with acupuncture and herbal medicines as well.
Whatever you decide to do to help ease your dog’s pain, remember to keep your vet apprised of your decision and any changes that may take place. Your pet will be appreciative for any relief you can provide from this painful and debilitating disease.
