Behavior Problems In Cats

Behavior Problems In Cats - Pet products pet supplies cat productsGetting a new kitten or cat is an exciting time for individuals and families as a whole! Cats are cuddly, soft, and quiet --- or are they? For the most part cat’s can be a joy to have and keep but sometimes you may detect a behavior problem in your cat or undesirable behavior that you need to change. The sooner the cat learns appropriate behavior the better.

There are a few things to keep in mind with cats. A cat is not a dog. This sounds like a simple and obvious statement but oft times cat owner, especially novice cat owners will try to train their cat as they would a dog. Any dog training techniques will not work with your cat! The number one rule you need to never forget is that you do not ever hit a cat (or any animal for that matter). Physical punishment only teaches your cat to fear you and may cause greater behavioral problems in the future.

So, what are some ways you can discourage undesirable behavior?

Since cats hate to be surprised, you can use water bottles, clapping, hissing, and other sudden noises (such as snapping, "No!") to stop unwanted behavior. However, be aware that these tactics will not work when you are not present. In addition, immediacy is key: even seconds late may render it ineffective. You must do it as soon as the cat starts the behavior.

Making certain behaviors impossible is another tactic. Keep food in containers; keep breakable and/or dangerous objects out of reach; make sure heavy objects, e.g. bookshelves, are stable. Think how you can apply childproofing tools to preventing cat problems. Even when the analogy isn't perfect, physically preventing problems is still a good guide. E.g., defrosting meat? Put it in the (unheated) stove, instead of out on the counter. It may take a little time, but you’ll have a much happier co-existence with your feline if take a few extra seconds to put up, put away and keep dangerous things out of reach of Fluffy.
