If you’re experiencing behavior problems with your cat you may want to look into behavior modification techniques. Behavior modification is two-fold. Starting with YOU. First you need to identify what your cat is doing that you consider inappropriate. Then, learn how to let your cat know that the behavior is unacceptable in the right way. Keep in mind that cats don’t speak English! You need to figure out ways to let your cat know what you want them to in a way that the animal understands.

For example, if your cat is “marking” his territory all over the house it’s important that you understand what this means to the cat. When a cat urinates in an area it has a different message for him than when he defecates. You need to provide a place that he can take care of his business appropriately and then let him know what the inappropriate areas are. There are sprays that let the cat know, by scent, that it is not to “mark” an area.

Some other problem behaviors in animals that can be controlled with behavior modification include:

Aggression towards other animals
Aggression towards people
Spraying or litterbox problems
Canine or feline rivalry
Separation anxiety
Fears and phobias
Destructive behavior
Excessive vocalization
Obsessive-compulsive disorders
Adjustment difficulties (introducing
new home, baby, pet, or family members)

Finding the right cat training is essential to having a happy home. Whatever you decide to do remember that you are in control. As the “parent” of the animal it’s up to you to make the rules of the house and provide a way for the cat to follow them.
