Choosing the right veterinarian for your beloved pet is as important as choosing the right doctor for yourself. Taking the time to ask questions and look around before you need the vet can save you many problems down the road. A thorough investigation includes gathering recommendations, evaluating locations and making personal visits.
1. Gather Recommendations
The first place to start your search for the right vet is with the people you know and associate with. Ask your friends, neighbors and coworkers who they recommend and why. Asking why is absolutely crucial. Not everyone values the same qualities in a vet and you want to find a vet that fits your needs and wishes. You may also consider getting recommendations from local training clubs, shelters or groomers. Once you’ve got a list of vets that you are interested in, scrub your list by calling the Better Business Bureau or local Chamber of Commerce. Make sure that they don’t have any complaints against them.
2. Evaluate Locations
Now that you have a list of highly referred, compatible vets, you can narrow it down by checking out their locations. Do they offer a clean and welcome environment? Is it obvious when you walk in the door that they love pets and that they love their profession? Are they conveniently located? Nothing is worse than having to go far out of your way when your pet has an emergency or you are short on time.
3. Make a Personal Visit
Once you have eliminated the clinics that are too far, too sloppy or not pet friendly, you are ready to make some appointments. You may want to set up an appointment for a simple toe-nail trim. This will give you a chance to see the vet in action and the opportunity to ask a few questions. Take some time before the appointment to really evaluate the things that are most important to you in a vet. Jot down a list of questions to bring with you to the appointment. Some questions that you might consider asking are:
· What services do they offer?
· How many vets do they have on staff?
· What are their hours?
· Do they offer payment plans?
· How do they handle emergencies?
· What do they charge for routine exams, procedures and vaccinations?
Of course, you’ll want to ask questions that address the things that are most important to you. When they answer the questions, you’ll want to consider their answer as well as how well they communicate. After all, your vet will need to communicate with you in layman’s terms about your pet’s overall health and any concerns that may arise or treatments that may be needed.
By taking the time to look around and ask questions, you are sure to find a veterinarian that meets your needs, communicates well and fits your personality as well as your pet’s. And in doing so, you and your pet are sure to enjoy your visits to the vet for years to come.
