The Dalmatian is the original "spotted dog". They are playful and spirited, these dogs adore children. They are wary enough to be a watchdog and become very attached to their owners. Training takes patience and gentle but firm and consistent handling, as they are rather sensitive. Dalmatian's are outgoing and friendly. Dalmatians make a great family dog. They need plenty of exercise. They have no special feeding requirements, and the coat is easy to groom, with minimal shedding. These dogs live to a ripe old age and never seem to slow down.

The earliest history of the breed begins in 3.700 BC with King Cheops, the builder of the Great Pyramid, who owned a spotted pet dog. The origin of the name is a corruption of Dama (Latin for Fallow Deer) and Chien (French for dog) became 'Damachien', akin to Dalmatian, which evolved later. English aristocrats soon discovered that the spotted dogs had feet and legs strong enough to run on the rough roads for 30 miles or so without breaking down. So it was then they became carriage dogs, and many contemporary prints showing them trotting happily behind their masters' carriages.

The ideal Dalmatian owner should be patient and committed to giving them the attention and training they require. Many Dalmatian owners have found themselves overwhelmed and unprepared for the time and attention this breed requires. People that work long hours or are away from their home for extended periods of time should not own a Dalmatian.
