We all want to keep our pets safe during the summer heat. Some safety procedures we can follow are common sense, yet we may not think of them off hand. Following are some dog summer tips to keep you and your pet happy!

1- Never leave your pet in the car. The temperatures in a vehicle can skyrocket during the hot summer months and your pet will cook to death while you’re shopping inside and air conditioned store.

2- Keep your pets away from lawn and plant fertilizers. This is poison and if your pet ingests any of these it could be lethal for him.

3- Spay or neuter your animal to prevent run-in’s with other people or animals during the summer months when you’re all likely to be outside more.

4- Check with your Vet to see if your pet should be taking heartworm medication. Heartworm can be transmitted my mosquitoes and can be fatal for your dog.

5- Make sure your dog is licensed and tagged. Because we keep out windows and doors open more in the summer the chances of our beloved pet getting out increases and this precaution will save you a lot of time and heartache.

6- Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets. If you know you’ll be gone for long periods of time get an automatic water device so that you’re dog can stay properly hydrated throughout the day. Try checking on your dog periodically or find someone who can.

7- If you plan on traveling with your pet make sure you prepare your pet in advance. Get him used to the pet carrier you’ll be using and make sure you know all the proper standards for airlines, hotels, etc.

8- Even though it’s hot pets still need exercise, but take them out in the early morning or later afternoon, when the summer sun isn’t bearing down on them and they will be in less danger of overheating and/or exhaustion.

9- Some pets require sunscreen on their nose and lips. If you’re going to be outdoors make sure you apply sunscreen and re-apply it as necessary.

10- Be smart about taking your pet to summer events. Some dogs get nervous in big, noisy crowds while others enjoy this type of interaction. You can determine what kind of environment may not be good for your dog.
