Getting Into Garbage

Getting Into Garbage - Pet productsPlayful kittens and pups as well as older, mature pets are notorious for getting into the garbage. What pet owner hasn’t come home at least once to a floor littered with used tissues and greasy paper towels?

There are smart ways to prevent this from happening. Keep a garbage container high off of the ground, on a counter or shelf, or use one that has a tight lid. Especially if your garbage thief is a cat, make sure to make these precautions from the beginning; if you start with an easy trash can, then get ones that are harder for your cat to sabotage, you may accidentally train the cat to become more and more skilled at it.

One of the most common reasons, especially for dogs, of sifting through the trashcan, is to steal any leftover food. While this may seem like a mischievous, bad habit, it is actually a totally natural behavior for a canine who is programmed to be scavenger, and to always take advantage of accessible edibles. So first you must realize that this is what a dog’s supposed to do, not a bad streak.

However, no one should have to tolerate their lunch being snatched from the counter by your mooch of a dog. Simply keep unattended food out of reach. It also helps to train the dog to stay out of the room in which food is being prepared or eaten. This habit helps prevent temptation on both accounts: you to throw him a scrap, and him to sneak away with one.
