Believe it or not, hacking up a hairball can actually be a painful experience for a cat, and you won't see your feline laughing at any human's hairball jokes. Hairballs pose a threat for cats by impaction (blocking the passage of digested food through the intestines). They form when a cat swallows hairs during grooming. Hairs are not digestible, so they can easily become clumped together with undigested food in the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. This either results in constipation, or even surgery, both of which involve pain which you as a pet owner should try to eliminate. Cats who compulsively groom or have longer fur are more prone to hairballs than others. If you keep an eye on your cat, the dry coughing up of hairballs is an easy condition to recognzie and prevent.
How to recognize a hairball problem:
· Well, first of all, hairballs. Sticky, wet cigar-shaped masses on your floor or furniture
· Constipation, or hair mixed in with hard stool
· dry, matted coat
· hacking (dry coughing) after meals
· lack of interest in playing or eating
How to treat and/or prevent hairballs:
· Brush your cat often to loosen and get rid of the extra hairs in her coat. Many cats will grow to like this activity, especially if you are gentle and coo at her while you brush.
· Use commercial brand hairball formulas that will coat your cat's throat and stomach
· Or feed your cat a small spoonful of butter, canned pumpkin, or babyfood squash to provide extra lubrication while the food is being swallowed.
