Relocating out of a familiar habitat is unsettling to any creature, humans as well as animals. When pets are involved in a move with their owners, there are several things that can help or hinder the transition. Keep in mind these tips in order to make it as smooth as possible for your cat.
About a week before the actual move, take your cat to the vet for an overall checkup. If transferring overseas, make sure to have your cat properly vaccinated.
It’s important to have an updated pet collar for your cat while you’re traveling in
between homes. This should include the cat’s name, your name, address, and telephone numbers. Also make sure that the collar fits appropriately. There should be about two fingers width between the collar and your cats neck.
Moving with your cat isn’t all about practical matters; the emotional damage wrought by a relocation can be very severe to felines who are used to their own turf. You’ve taken the first step to avoid a loss sense of security, however. Owners who leave their cats behind while moving are committing a harsh cruelty. So while it may be difficult for your cat to get used to new surroundings, it will still have the safety and security of its familiar owners.
While your in transit, make sure to keep a carrier and strong leash with you. You’ll also need litter, a litter pan, scooper, and plastic bags. Help your cat adjust by keeping feeding habits and times the same. If you’ll be staying at a hotel, make sure that it accepts pets before making reservations.
Once you are settled in your new home, maintain feeding times and allow your cat plenty of space to exercise. Place her bed and/or toys in similar places as in your old home.
By making an effort to help your cat with a smooth transition, you’ll be doing both her and you a favor.
