New Dog Flu Making Pets Sick
Research from the CDC shows a new strain of flu affecting dogs can be hard to detect, and sometimes deadly.
The virus was first discovered at a dog track, and has killed greyhounds in seven states. Earlier in September, there was an outbreak at a New York kennel, which made more than 100 dogs sick.
The new strain is usually transferred when dogs are housed together, but can also be passed at dog runs or from handlers.
Older dogs and young puppies are at high risk.
Researchers believe the flu will eventually show up in dogs across the country.
“The symptoms will probably be a fever response. It could be anywhere in the range of 103 to 106 degree temperatures and that may last anywhere from seven to 21 days,” according to Cornell University’s Dr. Edward Dubovi.
Scientists estimate about 20 percent of infected dogs won’t develop any symptoms, making detection even harder.
Researchers recommend pet owners keep sick dogs at home, and make sure they’re given a kennel cough injection before they are boarded.
