Obesity is the most common nutrition-related health condition in dogs in our society.
Obesity is defined as the excessive accumulation of body fat. Between 25 and 40 percent of dogs are considered obese or are likely to become obese.
How did my dog become obese?
The primary causes of obesity are overeating and lack of exercise. It’s important that you watch what your dog eats, much like you watch what you eat! When regular caloric intake exceeds the energy burned, the excess is stored as fat. As little as an extra 1 percent caloric intake can result in a 25 percent increase over ideal body weight by middle age. This means that if your dog lives a fairly sedentary life he needs less food, as opposed to active dog who burn through the calories they consume.
Because the dog gains weight gradually you may not even notice that your pet is becoming overweight. You may not even realize it until you look back on pictures of your dog or take him to the vet. But as his “parent” it is up to you to do something about his weight. Dogs, in their natural state don’t have rules or restrictions. Since we put those on them it’s up to us to care for them as they would be able to care for themselves in the wild --- you’ve never seen an overweight wolf, have you?
Dogs that are overweight may experience difficulty breathing or walking or they may be unable to tolerate heat or exercise. This can negatively affect all aspects of their life and future. To help your dog get back into shape first lower his caloric intake. Don’t just leave food out for him to eat. Measure and monitor his meals. If he seems hungry at first extra fiber and water may help to satiate him. Then exercise him! A daily walk may not be enough. If you don’t have a yard for your dog to run and play in, take him to a park, hiking, or on jogs (this can benefit you both!)
Having a vet look at your dog may be a good idea. They can run tests to make sure there isn’t a more serious health condition that has caused the weight gain. Above all remember that you’re pet loves you and would do his best to please you. A good dog owner will do her best to take the best care possible of her pet.
