Pet Travel Stress Relief - Pet Care Information

When you’re traveling with your pet, whether across town or half way around the world, you want to ensure that your trip is safe and fun for both you and your pet. The best way to relieve stress is to make sure you are a well informed and well equipped traveler. There are some basic considerations that will make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

Car Travel

1- Consider a pet booster seat. A booster seat will elevate your dog to safe height that allows you to strap your pet in using an ordinary seat belt and will also give your dog a view for the ride.
2- Get a barrier so your dog can safely sit in the back of the car while you’re driving. A pet barrier will allow you to take Fido along and give you peace of mind that he’s not jumping up into the front seat.
3- Bring a stress relief drink. These drinks help in case of a scare or accident, may also be used before car travel to calm you pet.

Airline Travel

o Each airline has different restrictions about when they will allow a pet to get on a plane. No commercial airline will accept a pet less than two hours before boarding. It's a legal requirement in the United States for a pet to eat a light meal two hours before boarding.

o Any live animal that travels on a plane has to have vaccination papers that are no less than 10 days old.
Tranquilizing
Don't tranquilize pets unless it's absolutely necessary, you need to know that there's a behavior problem often associated with sedation so don't do it just because the pet may be stressed.

Cages
All pets that fly have to have some sort of container. If you want to carry the animal on board with you, consider buying a Sherpa type of container.

Check with the airline to find out what size and breeds of cats and dogs can be taken into the cabin.

If you decide to have your pet fly in the cargo hold area, find out what kinds of cages are and are not accepted by the airline you use.

All commercial airlines in the United States use the International Air Transport Association guidelines for shipping pets.

The IATA recommends that pets fly in containers that don't leak, are escape proof, and suitable to the size of the animal.

Help your animal travel with less stress by putting them in their travel carrier for a few minutes each day before you leave. It helps them get used to it.
