Protecting Pets From Rabies

Protecting Pets From Rabies - Pet Care Information

Protecting Pets From Rabies - Pet products Rabies is nearly always a fatal disease. It is a serious infection of the nervous system, and will eventually attack a person or animal’s brain. The most common way for an animal to be infected is through a wound, usually a bite from another infected animal. Thus, prevention is the best way to protect your pet from rabies. Make visits to the veterinarian a regular occurrence and keep rabies vaccinations up-to-date for all cats, ferrets, and dogs under direct supervision.

Don’t ever handle, feed, or adopt a wild animal. Risk of exposure to rabies increases greatly when in contact with a wild animal. Monitor your pets closely by keeping cats and ferrets indoors and keeping dogs. It’s important to protect your pet from rabies by making sure they avoid contact with other animals that may not be vaccinated. Neutering or spaying your pet will keep the flow of visitors down considerably. If a stray animal does come lurking around, call animal control to avoid any possible contractions of illnesses. An animal control officer or your local health department is also the appropriate contacts if a wild or unidentified animal actually does bite your cat or dog. But you can prevent this from happening by not allowing your pet to run loose and unsupervised.

Any wild any animal such as a bat, raccoon, fox, skunk, or groundhog, which has bitten a domestic animal, should immediately be killed. The head should be taken to a testing laboratory to be examined. Animals that aren’t mammals cannot be infected with rabies.
