The natural temperament of a Rottweiler is one of calmness, courage and loyalty. The breed serve as calm and alert companions, and are known to follow their owners from room to room. Rottweilers are easy to train, and it is imperative that they are trained. The dogs are protective and will defend their family fiercely. Because of this quality, it is important that a young Rottweiler be socialized with other dogs and people. You need to show the puppy your friends and relatives and then they will always be welcomed enthusiastically. However, strangers will be able to get nowhere near your home. The same is true with other animals. The Rottweiler needs to be socialized at a young age. They can be aggressive with other dogs and should be kept on a leash in public. But the dog will accept other pets in the household, so long as he is socialized with them at a young age.

In ancient times this dog was prevalent in all the regions from the Swiss Canton of Argovie and extending to the south of Wiirtemberg, where the Romans had established important military centers. There they brought a Mastiff which worked as a guard dog and a drover. The drover dogs were critical in herding the cattle that supplied food to the Roman Legions. These dogs also guarded the supply dumps of the Roman armies and was traditionally the Roman camp dog.
