Self Cleaning Litterboxes

Self-cleaning Litterboxes - Pet productsDepending on your own lifestyle, and the habits of your cat, a self-cleaning litterbox may or may not be a wise investment. Many owners have problems with their cats tracking kitty litter around the house, or stepping on their stool on the way out, thus soiling the floor accidentally. Many self-cleaning litterboxes come with a top and a single entrance/exit. Having only one way to come in and out of the box usually helps eliminate the problems of tracking litterbox messes around the house. Some of these little house-shaped, self-cleaning litterboxes merely need a rolling to the side in order for a built-in grate to sift away the waste, thus making it much easier to keep the box sanitary.

Other self-cleaning litterboxes are more complex. Some need to be plugged into an outlet, others are connected to your own plumbing system. These last litterboxes are upwards of $300. The litterboxes that completely self-clean deposit the waste into a desposable container that you remove, empty and rinse.

Talking with cat owners who are using or who have had experience with self-cleaning litterboxes can help you decide whether or not they’re the right choice for you. You’ll want to research and find a litterbox that really does clean itself effectively, because most cats will stop using a litterbox if isn’t cleaned to their standards.

If a cat has a large stool, some electric self-cleaning litterboxes will not have a strong enough rake to take all of the waste away. Those that use rakes are often set to activate 10 minutes after your cat leaves the litterbox, and this may not be enough time to allow the waste to dry and clump.

Self-cleaning litterboxes, aside from these possible minor setbacks, can be a great, convenient way for you as a cat owner to make sure the litterbox is clean, and not have to go through the process yourself everyday.
