The Whippet looks like a small greyhound. He is graceful and slender but surprisingly hardy. He has a fine, dense coat that comes in many colors: brindle, black, red, fawn, tigered white or slate blue, either solid or mixed. The Whippet is intelligent, lively, affectionate, sweet, and docile. Whippets are very devoted companions. They are very sensitive both physically and mentally and should never be roughly trained.

It is generally agreed that the Whippet as we know it today developed in Northern England sometime during the 19th Century. It is a cross between the Greyhound and smaller terriers. This breed was created to be a swift hound, capable of hunting rabbits and other small game. The Whippet was known as the “poor man’s” dog as it was mainly owned by the lower class, factory workers and miners. When these people weren’t working they would race their Whippet’s. The word Whippet comes from the Latin word “via” meaning “a road, a street, a path or a way.”
